Mexico and Central America - At a Glance

Costa Rica

One of the world’s most desirable emergent destinations, Costa Rica shares a coastline with both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It has a delicate, awe-inspiring eco system and a wealth of responsible tourism programmes and conservation projects, working with everything from turtles to howler monkeys. It also boasts some of the most impressive luxury eco-accommodation options in Latin America.

Guatemala

Central America’s most populous country is full of dramatic history. There’s a millennia of Mayan culture as well as centuries under the Spanish empire. Lake Atitlan is one of the world’s most stunning lakes, with fascinating villages dotted around it, and Antigua is one of the world’s best preserved and beautiful colonial towns. The Mayan ruins in Tikal are fabulous, and there are active volcanoes, indigenous markets and surf beaches to explore as well.

Belize

There’s a multitude of experiences for you to enjoy in nature-rich Belize, from Mayan ruins, trekking in the mountains and the rainforests, to world-class scuba diving and snorkeling, and even swimming with manatees.

Or, if you dive, you can play a part in preserving the Belize barrier reef (the world’s second largest) for future generations.

Mexico

From huge cities to well-loved beach resorts and some of the most iconic historical monuments on Earth, Mexico has endless possibilities. For now, we are focusing on Yucatan, with its Caribbean blue waters, iconic Mayan ruins, cenotes (natural freshwater sink holes) and whale sharks in season.

THE ULTIMATE COSTA RICAN PHILANTHROPIC ITINERARY

Sample Itinerary & Pricing

The price for the 16 day adventure in Costa Rica is from $90,000 per person. Flights to Costa Rica are not included, but we can arrange these for you, including by private jet.

DAY 1 ARRIVE COSTA RICA FLY TO OSA

Upon arrival in San Jose, you are met at the airport and flown to Puerto Jimenez and transfered to your ecolodge.

Enjoy a delicious dinner.

DAY 2 WILDLIFE QUEST

A wildlife lover’s paradise!

This is a good place to spot some of Costa Rica’s most elusive and endangered inhabitants: Jaguars, Scarlet Macaws, Harpy Eagles, Baird’s Tapirs, Red-backed squirrel monkeys and White-lipped Peccaries.

All four of the monkey species (including the highly endangered Red-backed squirrel monkey), and all six of the feline species found in Costa Rica inhabit this area.

Over 40 species of frogs including red-eyed tree, rain, glass, dink, and poison arrow varieties, dozens of snakes including a variety of Boas and the dreaded bushmaster, as well as 28 species of lizards. More than 100 species of butterflies and at least 10,000 other insects call the Osa peninsula home.

DAY 3 TRANSFORMATIONAL SHARK ENCOUNTER

You will feel as though you are in a scene from the award winning documentary Shark Water and in a way, you are.

Just off the Osa Peninsula, you board your luxury yacht and join marine biologists and research teams in their tagging and tracking efforts of the Hammerhead Shark, spending the day in one of the largest marine protected areas in the world, the Golfo Dulce.

The yacht will make its way to a river mouth that is important as both a nursery area and a foraging and refuge habitat for the Hammerhead Shark. Currently, this area is being over-fished for shark finning and in fact, the IUCN Red List considers the Hammerhead Shark as a threatened and endangered species.

“The national park protects these large species, but females go to the coastal areas to have their offspring, which then spend nearly four years in unprotected zones.”

How You Can Help

You will help to collect scientific data on shark fisheries and help to identify and describe critical habitats for the Hammerhead Shark through Mision Tiburon’s shark tagging program. On an accompanying skiff that doubles as an open water research lab you will help fish, catch, measure, tag and then document the vital shark data.

You also “adopt” and name your own shark, receiving data and reports of its travels, whereabouts and growth over its lifespan.

This exclusive experience will be unlocked with a philanthropic donation of $10,000. You will spend the day supporting marine biologists in their efforts to conserve, protect and extend a massive biological corridor for the migration of sharks. You will be helping protect the Golfo Dulce as the first sanctuary for hammerhead sharks in the world.

DAY 4 MORNING & NIGHT SAFARI

We head out at first light in search of wildlife when it is at its most active.

You have the rest of the day free to rest and enjoy your ecolodge, before heading out again at night for more spectacular encounters.

You can then head out to the coast and collect data from nesting turtles or turtle nests – an extraordinary sight.

DAY 5 TRANSFORMATIONAL DOLPHIN ENCOUNTER

Off the Osa Peninsula fish swim with thousands of Spinner Dolphins in this marine heaven. Considered to be one of the most cetacean-rich areas in the world, the marine life here is abundant with pods of pan-tropic spotted, bottlenose, spinner and common dolphins as well as humpback, pilot, sperm and blue whales, giant manta rays, sea turtles and more.

Through this vast, borderless, open-ocean ecosystem swim large pods of spinner dolphins. They live here in unprotected waters. They gather in startling numbers to greet you with an acrobatic performance. Mark Twain wrote about these beautiful free spirits, and scientists have been studying them for years.

Hundreds of dolphins breach out 9 feet in the air, twisting their body into curves or spins up to 7 times in a single leap! Feeling adventurous? Jump in and swim along with wild dolphins in their natural home! Memories made here are unforgettable for the rest of your life.

Spotter planes, luxury vessels, biologists and expert marine guides make this experience extraordinary. Enjoy a scenic coastal flight, board your private sport-fishing luxury yacht, transfer to skiff boats, sub-wings and other water “toys”.

How You Can Help

This exclusive experience will be unlocked with a philanthropic donation of $6,000 to Pretoma – a non-profit NGO marine conservation and research organisation working to protect ocean resources and promote sustainable fisheries policies in Costa Rica and Central America. You will spend the day searching for a spinner dolphin superpod, swimming with thousands of dolphins and other marine life all while exclusively enjoying one of the most cetacean-rich areas of the world.

DAY 6 HELI-RAFTING & JUNGLE LUXE

Board your helicopter and fly over river valleys to your starting point for your whitewater rafting adventure.

What follows is an exciting, 1-1½ hour river-rafting trip (class II-III rapids) past vibrant rainforest scenery to Pacuare Lodge.

You’ll arrive at the lodge in time for a delicious lunch.

After lunch, you can hike through the lodge’s protected forest with your guide to an idyllic waterfall, take the Canopy Adventure or Canyoning Tour or simply relax in your private bungalow or suite and enjoy the peacefulness and beauty that surrounds you.

After savoring an exquisite dinner by candlelight, you may want to step upstairs to the lounge for a drink before retiring for a restful night’s sleep.

DAY 7-8 IN SEARCH OF JAGUAR

We head off early in search of Central America’s largest cat – the jaguar – in beautiful primary rainforest.

You can enhance this experience by making a donation to Jaguar Conservation and collect trap cameras and analyse videos at the base camp.

Overnight back at Pacuare Lodge.

DAY 9 PACUARE JUNGLE

You’ll awaken to birdsong and the soothing sound of the river. Head over to the main lodge for a hearty breakfast of homemade bread, tortillas, gallo pinto, tropical fruits, yogurt, eggs, pancakes, cereal, juice and coffee, complemented by a rainforest view.

The lodge employs resident naturalist guides who can provide information about the plants and animals that inhabit the surrounding forest.

You can take it easy, or begin enjoying some of the lodge’s seven outdoor experiences included in your Adventure Package which can take you deeper into the forest, or to the closest communities. Nature lovers may want to start before breakfast with a daybreak birdwatching tour.

Other options are to visit the nearby Cabécar Indian palapa, for an introduction to the local indigenous culture, or hike to the closest farming community to experience a bit of rural Costa Rican life.

Outdoor adventure options include the Canopy Adventure Tour, which takes you gliding between treetop platforms on cables, or Tropical Canyoning, which combines hiking, rock climbing and rappelling.

Hikers have several options to choose from: the Cabécar Indian Hike, a more demanding hike to an isolated indigenous home deep in the forest; or the Ancient Trail and Hidden Waterfall Hike, which heads higher into the mountains to a secret waterfall and takes most of the day. If you’d prefer to relax, visit our Jawa Juu Spa.

Harness the rainforest’s natural energy to create a healing environment unlike any other.

DAY 10 RAFT OUT & TWIN COAST ADVENTURE

After another great breakfast, you’ll depart by raft for an exhilarating morning of whitewater rafting past gorgeous tropical scenery (approximately 3½ hours over class III-IV rapids).

This stretch of the Pacuare River flows through canyons and past waterfalls and virgin rainforest. You’re likely to catch glimpses of varied birds and other wildlife during the quiet stretches.

From here you fly north to the Caribbean Coast.

Embark upon a journey to the untouched North Caribbean coast of the country for a complete change of landscape, flora and fauna.
Venice of the Tropics is only accessible by air and by boat through a maze of beautiful, intricate river networks and canals and lined dense tropical rainforest.
Reminiscent of the Amazon basin, this is a spectacular remote location to explore.

Your day begins with an incredible flight into this remote region. The plane flies at a low altitude allowing for breathtaking views of the landscape below. Fly over the continental divide, look into the heart of Costa Rica’s volcanic mountain range. Be awe-inspired by this privileged perspective. From this viewpoint, you’ll come to grasp the variations of some of the most amazing natural environments, flying around craters and deep jungle valleys. Witness the landscape drastically change right before your eyes.
Landing in Tortuguero is an experience unto itself, this remote landing strip is something out of National Geographic, as you come in for landing on this beachside “airport” you can’t help but wonder, where in the world am I?
From the sky to the sea it’s time to immerse where no engine can. Traditional canoes are your next and only means of transportation.
Paddle and glide through endless black water canals with a local character, a living and very funny encyclopedia, as he reads the forest and points out Spider Monkeys, Poison Dart Frogs, Caimans, an abundance of birds and so much more! The incredible wildlife encounters are endless throughout the day.
The boat will come to rest at the humble docks in the town of Tortuguero. Here, be welcomed by locals, coconut trees, music and art. Get lost in the carless “streets” strolling around this tiny village of artisans and small pubs.
Complete your Caribbean visit with an authentic Caribbean style lunch at Miss Junie’s. Well known worldwide and considered the best representation of the Afro-Costa Rican culinary concept in the area.
Feeling satiated and with new admiration and respect for this magnificent untouched piece of the planet, it’s time once more to board your private plane and soar into the setting sun. Contemplate that as of today, the only place in the universe where we are confident life exists is on our little home, the third planet from the sun, mother earth.

From here we fly to the Pacific Coast and transfer to the new Kasiiya Tented Camp in the Papagayo Peninsula.

DAY 11 OCEAN ODYSSEY

Lose sight of the shore and discover the ocean as it stirs your heart and inspires your imagination.
Swap out land for sea and discover the hidden secrets of the ocean. Experiencing the sublime beauty of this hypnotic landscape is an absolute must.
Meet your crew on the beach and board your yacht for the day. Motor along the rich coastline of Costa Rica. Look down and listen to the quite gurgle of water moving under the hull. Look up to feel the salty air on your face. Gaze out over the ocean and smile in the magical feeling, and hear yourself say out loud “I’m on a boat!”.
Keep your eyes peeled as you look out over the crystalline waters spotting dolphins, whales, manta rays, big sea turtles and more! Go snorkelling and explore the wild and exiting marine life underwater.
Anchor off a pristine secluded white sand beach for some ultimate relaxation in paradise. Laze in hammocks while the crew prepares a fresh catch BBQ for you to enjoy in this incredible dream like location.
Energized from lunch experience the adrenaline of a stand up paddle board, know what it’s like to swim like a dolphin playing with the sub-wing. Wake board, waterski, surf, scuba dive, free dive and more!
The last leg of your day is spent moving towards the setting sun as it melts into the ocean.

DAY 12 TRANSFORMATIONAL BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

You take a scenic private helicopter ride flying over Area de Conservacia Guanacaste and any clear volcano crater in the Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain range. Weather permitting, you may fly around craters, hover over waterfalls, in between deep jungle valleys and observe the geothermal activity. An expert guide will accompany you and with precise knowledge point out major land formations and focal points of the area in which you are soon to discover and help protect.

How you can help

You will play a vital role in this new world documentation spending the day with Daniel and his team of Parataxonomists. You will help explore the forest collecting specimens, help take photos and even learn how to document DNA samples and maybe, just maybe, this will be a day that a new species is discovered!

After an exciting and rewarding day you will spend the evening enjoying dinner with Daniel. There is no shortage of stories from Daniel. You will be on the edge of your seat listening in awe as this eccentric and energetic character shares how one way he grew this forest was simply with orange peels or how he once pulled a seven-pound baby deer from the stomach of a six-pound, five-foot-long boa constrictor!

After dinner, travel back into the night forest. Being in the jungle at night is an experience unto itself. The sounds of the night forest have been scientifically proven to bring the mind into the here and now when we allow our senses to absorb the sounds to become part of nature and the forces of life. With the night orchestra as the background music, a white sheet and fluorescent UV lights (black lights) as his baton, Daniel conducts hundred of moths, butterflies and other night insects in a dance with the night.

Having spent the day as an active participant in the transformation of the planet, you will leave this unique place yourself transformed.

DAY 13 FISSURES AND FUMAROLES

Observe the geothermal activity of both live and dormant volcanoes that make up this incredible ridge dividing the Caribbean & Pacific coasts.
Observe up close active and vegetative volcanic slopes, spend the day exploring two completely different eco-systems influenced by the same volcano.
From this privileged perspective grasp the variations of some of the most amazing natural environments.
Learn about the connection that these Giants of Planet Earth have with all life. From the nearby rivers to the lowlands of the Central American coasts, you’ll be in awe of the ecological evolution created by volcanoes.
Start your experience with a scenic flight over a volcanic mountain range, or a beautiful countryside drive through rural villages.
First stop is in the cloud forest surrounding an active volcano. Go on a short hike along a turquoise river to a wild cascading waterfall. The colour of this river will seem otherworldly, and it is.
Explore the magic behind what makes the colour of this river so vibrant as the river shares her story and teaches you that we are always discovering things for the first time. As we move through the landscape, and through life, there will always be something new.
Relax in these fresh, mineral-rich river pools and enjoy a light snack on the river’s edge.
Journey onward to your second stop in a completely different ecosystem, the tropical dry forest. Here, discover an entirely different river from the same volcano. This one carries thermal waters from an underground source very close to the magma. Experience first hand how the high level of heat and activity inside the Earth, close to a volcano, can provide opportunities for generating geothermal energy, just one of the ways that make Costa Rica a leader in renewable energy.
From the source to the destination, arrive at your own private natural hot springs. Experience first hand the healing powers of middle earth.
Enjoy a flavorful lunch created by your in-house chef using fresh ingredients from the tropical continent.

DAY 14 SUBMARINE EXPLORATION

Spend the day with a marine biologist aboard a submarine to explore the wonders of the underworld.
Have you ever wondered what lies within the dark Abyss? Since the first deep ocean explorations, venturing to these depths was reserved for a very few privileged scientists and military personnel. Now that list is extended to a fortunate few.
Board your custom-built one-atmosphere submarine, capable of carrying a pilot and two passengers to a depth of 1,500 feet (450 meters). She can agilely operate throughout her range in comfort and safety.
The view from the acrylic sphere is unparalleled, with a 360-degree field of vision. The 4-inch thick acrylic sphere actually disappears when immersed, giving the astonishing sensation of total freedom.

DAY 15 FREE DAY

You may like to relax and enjoy your lodge, or you may choose for cultural immersion, with a Folkloric Fiesta:

Spend a day paying tribute to the diversity of this nations spirit.
Celebrate the Tico Farmers & Cattle Ranchers as they share their stories through traditional dance, folklore and cuisine.
It’s the dust, the mud, the man and the bull. It’s the roar of the crowd, the rhythm of a culture, music in the wind.
It’s the white of his knuckle in the mist. It’s a feeling, it’s a knowing that each man is good in the sight of a great spirit.
But, don’t mess with the bull!
The origins of some of the greatest traditions of Costa Rica were born amongst the tico ranchers. Today, as one of the locals, get ready to party at a traditional “fiesta”!
“Bailes” – Folkloric Dances
“Cimarrona” -Traditional live music
“Carrera de Cintas” – A cowboy’s game – Watch as cattle ranchers attempt to put a peg in a loop while on a galloping horse
“Los Toros” – Witness the farmers participate in some fun recreational bull riding
“Circulo de los Valientes” – Cowboy’s try to hold their spot in the ring ,while an angry bull runs around the “redondel”, the last man standing is the winner!
