Legendary. Awe inspiring Blue Hole. Magnificent Lighthouse reef.
The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70 km (43 mi) from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, 318 m (1,043 ft) across and 124 m (407 ft) deep.
The Great Blue Hole is a part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage Site of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
This site was made famous by Jacques Cousteau, who declared it one of the top five scuba diving sites in the world. In 1971 he brought his ship, the Calypso, to the hole to chart its depths
We leave very early so you get the Blue Hole all to yourself. You get to experience the Hole at its pristine and clearest best before other divers get there and the sediment get stirred up and impedes visibility.
We descend along the edge of the Blue Hole, in the area most likely to be visited by reef sharks. At 135ft/42m, we swim through stalagtites formed by a limestone cave system which was created before the site was covered by the ocean.
Even though the Great Blue Hole is considered a bucket-list dive, one should be aware that it is not for divers of all skill levels – a prerequisite is logging more than 24 dives. It is also not a ‘colourful dive’, instead, divers witness a dark cave with impressive stalactites.
You should get to see at least some of: Hawksbill Turtles, Loggerhead Turtles, Eagle Rays, Moray Eels, Nurse Sharks, and Southern Sting Rays.
If you are lucky, you will see: Manta Rays, Reef Sharks, Hammerhead Sharks, and Bottlenose Dolphins.
The surrounding Lighthouse Reef is the densest, richest in Belize. Corals are huge, colorful, and varied. Marine life is superb. Most people say that this reef is worth the trip alone.
“My wife and I wanted to travel through Chile, Bolivia and Peru and were slightly daunted by the logistics of organising such a varied trip.John Resse, USA
Chris was incredibly helpful not only mapping out the most exciting and engaging trip, but also using his extensive personal knowledge of the best things to do. They were reassuringly efficient in organising the trip, monitoring how we were doing during the trip and making adjustments to improve the trip.Tracy Williams, UK
Chris’s passion and enthusiasm encouraged us to do things we wouldn't have thought to do, which gave us fantastic memories of the trip of a lifetime.”Tony Thomas, USA
